DRIVING EAST ON I-70 ABOUT 15 MILES EAST OF FRISCO, CO, THERE WAS SUDDENLY THICK WHITE STEAM COMING OUT OF MY VENTS, FOLLOWED BY BOILING HOT COOLANT POURING ONTO MY FEET. IT WAS HARD TO SEE, AND HARD TO BRAKE BECAUSE OF THE HOT FLUID. I WAS EVENTUALLY ABLE TO PULL ONTO THE SHOULDER. I IMMEDIATLY CALLED VW OF AMERICA, BECAUSE I HAD HEARD OF THIS HAPPENING. FIRE STARTED FROM WITHIN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT AND BENEATH THE DASH. THE FIRST OWNER OF THE VEHICLE CLAIMED THAT THE VEHICLE HAD MANY ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS. THE DEALER WAS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM, BUT THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT.*AK

THE SECOND (RIGHT) FAILURE WAS AT HIGHWAY SPEED, RESULTING IN WHEEL SEPARATION AND LOSS OF CONTROL. NEITHER THE MANUFACTURER NOR THE DEALER HAVE OFFERED AN EXPLANATION OR APOLOGY FOR NOT INSPECTING ALL WHEEL BEARINGS AFTER THE FIRST PREMATURE FAILURE.
