ON CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A NGC-1 POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE, THE SOFTWARE PROTOCOLE USED TO TEST THE VEHICLE EXHAUST GAS RECIRCULATION (EGR) SYSTEM MAY LEAD TO ENGINE STALLING UNDER CERTAIN OPERATING CONDITIONS.

TL* THE CONTACT'S SON OWNS A 2004 CHRYSLER PACIFICA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE HIS SON WAS DRIVING AT 20 MPH, A STATE TROOPER HAD BEGUN TO WAVE HIS SON'S VEHICLE DOWN. THE TROOPER THEN INFORMED HIM THAT THE VEHICLE WAS ON FIRE. ALL OCCUPANTS IMMEDIATELY EXITED THE VEHICLE AND THE STATE TROOPER WAS ABLE TO EXTINGUISH THE FIRE WITH A FIRE EXTINGUISHER. A POLICE AND FIRE REPORT WERE FILED AT THE SCENE AND NO INJURIES WERE REPORTED. DUE TO THE FAILURE, THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE CONTACT'S HOME

CONTINUED AT APPROX 70 MPH WHEN THERE SEEMED TO BE AN INTERNAL EXPLOSION WITHIN THE ENGINE CAUSING THE ENGINE TO STOP AND ALL FRONT AIRBAGS TO DEPLOY. VEHICLE THEN CAUGHT FIRE AND WAS TOTALLY DESTROYED.

THE CONTACT OBSERVED MAJOR SMOKE AND FLAMES UNDERNEATH THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT WAS CALLED AND DETERMINED THAT THE FIRE STARTED FROM THE ENGINE AREA. A FIRE REPORT WAS FILED.
